The Telegraph-1844
The Telegraph was the first device that sent messages across long distances other than mail. This device came just in time to help the world, it helped transmit messages to people throughout the civil war, it helped people notify other people of criminals quickly, it helped people learn of news or even just a quick note to a friend, the possibilities went on with this device. The Telegraph was quite complicated for the time period that it was in. There were many versions of it and so many different concepts on how to get a message delivered the quickest and most efficient. Although there were many inventors of the Telegraph there is one inventor in particular who is very well known all over not just America, but the world. That inventor was Samuel F.B. Morse, who not only invented the Telegraph, but also had a whole code invented using dots and dashes, called Morse Code. Samuel F.B. Morse's Telegraph uses electricity, which is sent through wires by a single off and on switch, which opens and closes the circuit. With each signal sent, it is sent as either a dot or a dash, and by the tapping of the on switch, when this tap is sent through the sender, it is received by the receiving device, and is either received by being written out by a pencil (the dots and dashes) or engraved in a piece of paper by the machine creating the dots and dashes. When Samuel F.B. Morse completed this original invention of the Telegraph he traveled to the Washington and presented his invention by sending a Telegraph from Washington to Boston. This message was sent on May 24th 1844, and became known as the first Telegraph ever sent. This invention was something that was so advanced and impressed all the people around to watch this event happen. The first Telegraph ever sent said "What hath god wrought", which was later preserved and saved, but was organized by Samuel F.B. Morse and had the letters written beneath them and a caption written by Morse explaining that it was the first Telegraph sent and showed the date and place that it was sent. After the presentation of his device, Samuel F.B. Morse sent in a patent for the Telegraph. This amazing invention changed the way of life of people, the unknown had happened, being able to send a message across the country.
